Play Juuouki (Japan) [En by Aka v1.0] (~Altered Beast) Online
You start as a sluggish warrior, then turn into a janky werewolf or dragon when you grab power-ups—it’s clunky, weird, and oddly satisfying when you send enemies flying. The short levels and brutal difficulty make every victory feel stolen.

Okay, so Juuouki (or Altered Beast if you grew up with the Western version) is one of those NES games that feels like it shouldn’t work as well as it does. You start off as this kinda slow, underwhelming warrior—until you grab those floating orbs and suddenly you’re a werewolf with claws that send enemies flying. Or a dragon that breathes fire in the most awkward, janky way possible. It’s ridiculous, and I love it.
The levels are short, the difficulty spikes are brutal, and the controls take some getting used to—but there’s something about the way this game commits to its weird, grimy aesthetic. That screechy soundtrack, the way your character yells "WISE FWOM YO GWAVE" when you respawn… it’s all so aggressively ’80s arcade. Not gonna lie, I died a lot to cheap hits from zombies I couldn’t even see off-screen, but morphing into a beast and wrecking everything never got old. If you can handle some retro jank, this one’s a blast.
Just don’t expect it to go easy on you.
