Play Juuouki (Japan) Online
You slash through enemies as a warrior, then shapeshift mid-dungeon—wolf-dashing under traps, hawk-gliding over chasms, dragon-breathing fire on bosses—all with that satisfying NES crunch.

Juuouki (or Beast King if you're playing the unofficial English patch) is one of those weird, wonderful NES games that makes you go, "Wait, why didn't this get localized?" You start as a sword-wielding warrior, but within minutes, you're transforming into a wolf to dash through tight caves, a hawk to soar over gaps, and a dragon to torch enemies—which feels way cooler than it has any right to on 8-bit hardware.
The whole thing plays like a condensed, slightly janky Zelda with way more teeth. You'll backtrack through forests and temples, using each form to solve puzzles (wolf senses hidden paths, hawk grabs distant keys, etc.), and the lack of handholding means you'll actually have to think about where to go next. The spritework's surprisingly expressive too—watching your guy morph into a pixelated dragon never gets old.
Fair warning: it's tough, and the translation patches can be... creative. But if you're into retro action-adventures with weird mechanics, this cult classic holds up better than most. Just don't blame me when you get stuck in that one temple for an hour.
