Game Overview

Karateka was one of those NES games that looked simple but had this weirdly satisfying rhythm to it. You play as this lone karateka (no fancy name, just you) trying to rescue Princess Mariko from Akuma's fortress. The controls are basic—punch, kick, block—but timing is everything. Mess up and you'll eat a spinning kick to the face before you even reach the first gate.

What I love is how the enemies telegraph their moves just enough that you can react if you're paying attention. The music's sparse but tense, and there's something oddly charming about the way your character bows before each fight. Just don't get cocky—even the crows in the courtyard will wreck you if you let your guard down.

It's short, but that just means every mistake stings more. You'll probably lose a few lives figuring out the patterns, but nailing that final showdown with Akuma feels legitimately earned.
