Play Karateka (Japan) (Beta) Online
Take control of a martial artist, navigate a fortress, battle enemies with kicks and punches, and rescue a kidnapped princess in this classic NES martial arts challenge.
Karateka on the NES was an early release for the system, developed by Jordan Mechner and published by Broderbund. It arrived during a time when many games were still figuring out how to translate arcade-style action into the home console format, offering a straightforward martial arts challenge without much fanfare.
You control a lone martial artist making his way through a fortress to rescue a kidnapped princess. Movement is screen by screen; you walk left or right, and enemies approach from either side. The combat relies on timing high and low kicks and punches, while also blocking incoming attacks. If you misjudge an enemy's strike, you can be knocked out in just a few hits. The game is short but demanding, with little room for error, and finishing it gives a real sense of accomplishment through sheer repetition and learned timing.
