Kicker came out in the arcades in 1982 from Konami, a time when you'd find it wedged between Pac-Man and Donkey Kong cabinets. It was a straightforward game, the kind you'd drop a quarter into for a quick session without needing to learn a complicated backstory. The screen was simple, just a goal and a ball, but that was all it needed to hook you.

You control a goalkeeper, represented by a small block, and your only job is to stop the soccer ball from getting past you into the net. The ball starts slow, bouncing from the top and bottom of the screen, but with every save it comes back faster and at sharper angles. You have to anticipate its path, sliding your keeper up and down to block it, and the timing gets incredibly tight. The difficulty ramps up quickly, turning a calm match into a frantic test of reflexes. It feels like a pure battle against the machine, a test of how long you can keep up before it finally slips by.
