Game Overview

So here's the deal with Kid Icarus on NES - you play as Pit, this winged kid who's basically heaven's last hope against Medusa (yeah, that Medusa). She's kidnapped the goddess Palutena and turned Angel Land into a nightmare, so guess who gets to climb through monster-infested underworld caverns and sky palaces to fix everything?

The gameplay's this weird mix of platforming and shooting - you're constantly climbing upward while blasting enemies with arrows (you can shoot straight or angled up, which comes in handy). Fall off the bottom of the screen and it's game over, which happens more than you'd like at first. The levels have these little doorways that lead to all sorts of surprises - sometimes it's a shop where you spend hearts dropped by enemies (on stuff like better bows or health refills), sometimes it's a trap room full of monsters, and occasionally you'll find these weird test chambers where you can gamble for powerful weapons.

What's cool is how Pit grows stronger as you play - defeating enemies gives XP that boosts your max health, and some chambers permanently upgrade your attack power. The inventory system's kinda charming too - you'll end up carrying around random stuff like a torch for dark areas (why does an angel need a torch?) or this hilarious mallet that lets you free petrified allies by smashing them. Classic NES logic.
