Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories came out on the Game Boy Advance in 2004, developed by Square Enix. It was a direct sequel to the first Kingdom Hearts, and it felt like a natural, if unusual, extension of that world on a handheld. The GBA was full of ambitious ports and side stories at the time, and this one fit right in, offering a surprisingly complex narrative for a cartridge.

You control Sora, moving room to room through a mysterious castle, with each room represented by a card you play from a deck you build. Your main goal is to ascend the castle's floors, but the real drive is uncovering the truth behind your fading memories. Combat is entirely card-based; you build a deck of attack, magic, and item cards, and battles play out in real time as you select cards to use against enemies. The game can be unforgiving, demanding careful deck construction and quick reflexes to interrupt enemy attacks with higher-numbered cards. It feels like solving a tense, strategic puzzle with every fight.
