Game Overview

Kinnikuman: The Dream Match came out for the Game Boy in 1992, developed by Yutaka. It was a time when portable wrestling games were rare, and this one tried to capture the over-the-top action of the anime right in your hands. The sprites were small but full of character, fitting right in with other fighting games on the system.

You control one of several superhuman wrestlers, each with their own wild moves, and the goal is to win matches by pinfall or knockout. The game uses a simple control scheme for punches, kicks, and grapples, but timing is everything for special attacks and reversals. Matches are fast and can be surprisingly difficult against the CPU, which rarely misses a chance to counter. It feels satisfying to land a perfectly timed finishing move after a back-and-forth struggle.
