Kirby's Dream Land 2 came out on the Game Boy in 1995, developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo. It arrived late in the handheld's life, when developers had really learned how to make the most of that little green screen. You could tell they were pushing the hardware further here, with more detailed sprites and a bigger world to explore than the first game.

You control Kirby, the pink puffball, and your goal is to retrieve the stolen Rainbow Drops from the evil Dark Matter. You move screen by screen, inhaling enemies to either spit them back out or copy their abilities, like turning into a fiery wheel or a sharp cutter. The big addition is the animal friends: Rick the hamster helps you dash through tight spots, Kine the fish lets you swim against currents, and Coo the owl gives you better control in the air. The pacing is relaxed, and the difficulty stays pretty gentle until the later stages. It feels like a cozy, imaginative adventure where you're always discovering some new trick or hidden room.
