League Bowling came out in arcades in 1990, developed and published by SNK. It was a straightforward sports game for its time, a common sight alongside fighting games and shooters on the Neo Geo platform. You didn't need a complicated backstory; it was just you, a lane, and some pins.
You control a bowler from a selection of international characters, each with their own slight statistical differences. The main objective is to knock down all ten pins, frame by frame, trying to beat either a preset score or a friend in the two-player versus mode. Signature mechanics include a power meter for controlling the speed and spin of your throw, and the ability to adjust your starting position on the lane for each attempt. The game moves at a deliberate pace, letting you focus on each shot, and the physics provide a decent challenge without being overly punishing.
