LEGO Racers came out on the Nintendo 64 in 1999, developed by High Voltage Software. It was part of that wave of late 90s games that tried to capture the fun of building with LEGOs and turn it into something you could play. It didn't try to be a serious racing sim; it was just a colorful, blocky alternative to the other cart racers on the system.

You control a custom LEGO minifigure racer, and the main goal is to win cups across different themed worlds. Before each race, you build your own vehicle from a big box of bricks, choosing parts for speed, handling, or just because they look funny. During the race, you can pick up power-ups to drop hazards like oil slicks or deploy a temporary rocket boost. The tracks are full of shortcuts and interactive elements, like ramps that send you flying over entire sections. The difficulty is pretty forgiving, making it easy to pick up for a quick race. It feels like playing with a big bin of LEGOs; unpredictable, a little janky, but full of simple, creative joy.
