I picked up Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events for the Game Boy Advance back in 2004, published by Activision. It was one of those licensed games that came out alongside the movie, and on the GBA, it fit right in with the platform's mix of side-scrollers and puzzle adventures. The visual style and tone really tried to capture the gloomy, off-kilter feel of the books, which was a nice touch for fans.
You control Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire, switching between them to use their unique skills: Violet invents gadgets, Klaus researches clues, and Sunny bites through obstacles. The main goal is to survive Count Olafโs schemes by exploring environments screen by screen, solving environmental puzzles, and avoiding his traps. The pacing is deliberate, with a focus on thinking your way through challenges rather than quick action. It feels like a thoughtful, sometimes tricky adventure that stays true to the spirit of the source material.
