If you've read the books, you'll feel right at home with this GBA adaptation—it nails that weird mix of gloom and dry humor Lemony Snicket does so well. You switch between the three Baudelaire kids, each with their own weirdly specific skills: Violet builds contraptions out of junk, Klaus actually reads books to solve puzzles (weird concept for a video game, right?), and baby Sunny... well, she bites things. A lot.
The levels are these moody little dioramas straight from the stories, complete with that snarky narrator who won’t stop reminding you how doomed everything is. It’s got platforming bits, some light puzzling, and Count Olaf shows up looking even more ridiculous than in the books. Honestly, half the fun is just seeing how they translated the series’ dark whimsy into pixel art.
Fair warning: it’s short, and the controls can be a little stiff when you’re climbing as Sunny. But for a licensed game from 2004? Way better than it had any right to be. Just don’t blame me when you get the theme song stuck in your head for weeks.
