Three girls get tossed into a fantasy world, handed swords, and told to figure it out—chunky pixel battles with elemental magic make the chaos kinda charming.

Magic Knight RayEarth on the Game Boy came out in 1995 from Tomy. It’s an action RPG based on the anime, and it fits right in with other mid-90s handheld adventures, offering a solid mix of exploration and combat without too much fuss.
You control one of three heroines, switching between them to use their unique weapons and magic. The goal is to rescue the Pillar and save Cephiro, which means navigating screen-by-screen areas, fighting monsters, and delving into dungeons. Each character has a distinct attack style and elemental spell, so you often swap to solve puzzles or defeat certain enemies. The pacing is deliberate, and some sections can be tricky with limited visibility and respawning foes. It feels like a condensed quest, straightforward but with just enough variety to keep you pushing through each zone.
