Game Overview

Mappy is a 1983 arcade game by Namco that you can play today through MAME. It came out during a time when arcades were full of simple, bright games designed to grab your attention and your quarters. This one fits right in with its cartoon style and clear objectives.

You control Mappy, a police mouse, whose job is to recover stolen goods from a mansion overrun by cats. The main objective is to move from floor to floor, grabbing all the items on a screen while avoiding the feline enemies. Your primary tools are the trampolines; you use them to bounce to higher floors, but timing is critical because the cats can jump on them too. Doors at the sides of the screen can be used to temporarily stun pursuers, but they reopen after a moment, so it's a brief respite. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty increases steadily as more aggressive cats appear and objects like moving safes get introduced. It feels like a tense game of cat and mouse where every successful screen clear brings a real sense of relief.
