Mappy came out in 1983 as an arcade game from Namco, back when side-scrolling platformers were still finding their footing. It stood out with its bright, cartoonish look and a premise that felt more like a Saturday morning cartoon than a typical maze chaser.
You control Mappy, a police mouse, navigating a multi-story mansion to recover stolen goods. You move screen by screen, bouncing on trampolines to reach higher floors while avoiding a gang of persistent cats called the Meowkies. Your main tools are the doors you can slam shut to temporarily stun pursuers, and later, you can use microwaves hidden in certain rooms to eliminate them entirely. The pacing is relentless; the cats respawn quickly and grow more aggressive as you collect more items. Outmaneuvering them with quick timing and clever door slams gives a real sense of tactical satisfaction.
