Mars Matrix came out in arcades in 2000, developed by Takumi Corporation. It was part of that late 90s, early 2000s wave of shooters that really pushed for dense, intricate bullet patterns and scoring systems that rewarded precision over just survival. It didn't have the name recognition of some bigger series, but it carved out its own space with a very distinct, hands-on way of dealing with the chaos on screen.

You pilot a small ship through vertically scrolling stages filled with enemy craft and a truly overwhelming amount of projectiles. Your main weapon is a standard shot, but your primary tool for both defense and scoring is the Absorb System. By holding down a button, you create a small force field in front of your ship that sucks in enemy bullets, converting them into gold cubes. You can then release this stored energy as a massive, screen-clearing counterattack called the Reflect Force. The entire game is built around this push and pull; you constantly judge when to hide behind your shield to build power and when to unleash it to wipe out major threats or capitalize on enemy formations for huge score multipliers. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is steep, demanding quick reflexes and careful resource management. It feels like you are actively dismantling the enemy's offense, piece by piece, to fuel your own.
