Mars Matrix is one of those shooters that feels familiar at first—until you realize it’s got its own weird little twist. Instead of just dodging bullets, you can hold down fire to suck them up and then unleash them back at enemies like some kind of angry space vacuum. It’s oddly satisfying, especially when you pull off a big counterattack and watch everything explode.
The whole "absorb and reflect" thing isn’t just for show, either. Every enemy you take down drops these glowing cubes that level up your ship, and if you chain kills right, you can rack up insane multipliers. The Dreamcast version throws in extras like replays and a score attack mode, but honestly, the core arcade experience is already so tight that I kept going back just to see how far I could push my high score.
It’s not the easiest shmup out there, but once you get the rhythm of absorbing and countering, it clicks in a way that makes other shooters feel a little basic.
