Mech Platoon came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2001, published by Natsume. It was one of those early GBA titles that tried to bring a deeper, tactical experience to a handheld better known for platformers and action games at the time. You don't see many real-time strategy games on that system, so it always stood out for attempting something complex on a small screen.
You command a squad of customizable mechs from a top-down view, managing resources and engaging in real-time skirmishes across grid-based maps. The main goal is to protect your base while dismantling the enemy's production facilities. Key mechanics include scavenging wreckage on the battlefield for parts to upgrade your units, and carefully balancing offense with defense because leaving your base exposed for too long often leads to a swift defeat. The pace is deliberate, demanding attention to unit positioning and resource flow rather than quick reflexes. It feels like conducting a messy, satisfying orchestra of metal and firepower.
