Metal Slug Advance (J) is a run-and-gun shooter for the GBA that keeps the series' chaotic energy intact. You pick one of two soldiers, then dive straight into bullet-dodging madness against waves of enemies, tanks, and weird mechanized bosses.
The first thing you notice is how good it feels to move and shoot. The controls are tight, and the sprites have that classic Metal Slug charm—explosions fill the screen, enemies flail when hit, and everything moves with this exaggerated weight. It's satisfying just to watch.
What sets this apart from other entries is the E-card system. Rescuing POWs gives you these collectibles that unlock permanent upgrades back at camp. It adds a light metagame to the usual carnage, making replays a little different each time.
Metal Slug Advance (J) doesn't reinvent the formula, but it's a solid portable version of what makes the series fun. Just expect to die a lot—this isn't an easy one.
