Monster Race came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by KID and published by Irem. It was one of those oddball titles that felt right at home on the system, a time when developers were willing to try strange concepts just to see what would stick.
You pick from a small roster of strange creatures, each with a unique, often awkward, method of movement; one hops, another just flops along the ground. The goal is to complete a series of side-scrolling race tracks, bumping and shoving other monsters out of your way. The main mechanics involve navigating environmental hazards and using the constant screen-shaking collisions to disrupt opponents. It is a short, janky experience that moves at a frantic, chaotic pace. Playing it feels like trying to win a brawl in a washing machine.
