Monster Race Other is one of those Game Boy games that makes you wonder how it didn’t get more attention back in the day. You pick from these weird little creatures—some look like angry blobs, others like mutant turtles—and then just go nuts racing them through these tiny, packed tracks. The first time I played, I picked the one with the big eyes thinking it’d be fast. Nope. Turns out the spiky purple guy who leaves oil slicks is way better for causing chaos.

It’s got that same frantic energy as Mario Kart, but everything’s cranked up to 11. One second you’re in first place, the next you’re eating dirt because someone dropped a banana peel (or was it a bomb? Hard to tell with these pixelated graphics). The tracks are short but packed with shortcuts and weird little hazards—I still haven’t figured out if that one jump actually helps or just launches you into a pit half the time.

If you’ve got a soft spot for janky, charming retro racers, this one’s a riot. Just don’t expect fairness—part of the fun is how gloriously unbalanced it all is.
