Game Overview

Monster in My Pocket came out on the NES in 1992, a Konami game based on the little rubber monster toys. It was a time when licensed games were a real gamble, but this one had a certain charm that set it apart from the usual movie cash-ins. You played as either a vampire or a Frankenstein's monster, both miniaturized and running through a surprisingly large version of Los Angeles.

You control your chosen monster, moving screen by screen through suburban backyards and city streets, punching and kicking a bestiary of other pocket-sized creatures. The main goal is to fight your way to a powerful warlock and stop his evil plans. A couple of things make it stand out: you can pick up random objects like rocks and bottles to throw at enemies, and a double-jump move is essential for navigating the platforms. It's a fairly tough game, with some cheap enemy placements, but the two-player co-op mode lets you tackle the challenge with a friend. It feels like a straightforward, slightly janky brawler that's more fun than it has any right to be.
