Game Overview

I remember picking up Frankenstein's Monster for the Atari 2600 back in 1983. It was published by Data Age, one of those companies that put out a lot of games for the system, some more memorable than others. At the time, it stood out because of its horror theme, which wasn't all that common on the platform. You didn't see many games based on classic monsters, so it had a certain novelty, even if the graphics were as blocky as everything else on the 2600.

You control a villager trying to seal Frankenstein's castle by carrying stones to block its entrance. The main objective is to stop the monster from escaping, but it's not easy. You move screen by screen, avoiding hazards like acid pits and giant spiders that get in your way. Each time you bring a stone back, more enemies appear, making subsequent trips increasingly dangerous. The pacing is tense; you're always racing against the monster's awakening, and the difficulty ramps up quickly. It feels like a desperate scramble against overwhelming odds, and every successful stone placement brings a small, hard won relief.
