Monsters vs Aliens on the DS is basically what happens when you take the movie and turn it into a chaotic little brawler. You pick one of the monsters—I went with Ginormica first because, well, she’s giant—and start smashing through waves of those weird squid-like aliens. The controls are simple, just jump and attack combos, but there’s something satisfying about plowing through enemies as a 50-foot woman.
The levels mix things up with some light platforming and the occasional boss fight where you actually have to dodge instead of button-mashing. It’s not deep, but the animations have that cartoony charm, and the dialogue keeps the goofy tone of the movie. If you just want to wreck some aliens for 20 minutes between bus rides, it does the job.
Also, B.O.B. is weirdly fun to play—he just flops around like a sentient jelly blob.
