Mortal Kombat Deception came to the GameCube in 2004, a port of Midway's fighting game that arrived a bit later than its counterparts on other consoles. You control a roster of fighters, each with their own special moves and fatalities, to battle through arcade ladders or the expansive Konquest mode. The main objective is to defeat opponents in one-on-one combat, but the game expands with puzzle-like Chess Kombat and the block-stacking challenge of Puzzle Kombat. Konquest mode has you exploring a 3D world, completing quests, and unlocking new abilities for your character. The pacing is deliberate in the adventure portions, while the fights themselves are fast and demand precise timing. It feels satisfying to land a well-timed combo or finally pull off a difficult fatality after practicing the input.
