Play Mortal Kombat II Unlimited Online

You’ll get wrecked by Baraka’s blade arms before you even figure out blocking, but nailing those ridiculous fatalities—like Liu Kang’s dragon morph—never gets old. The Genesis somehow makes those janky digitized sprites feel perfect.

Game Overview

Mortal Kombat II Unlimited on the Sega Genesis is where the series really hit its stride—brutal, ridiculous, and somehow even more over-the-top than the first one. I remember booting it up for the first time and immediately getting wrecked by Baraka’s blade arms before I even figured out how to block. The fatalities here are gloriously excessive (Liu Kang turning into a dragon still makes me laugh), and the "Unlimited" version means none of the gore got toned down for squeamish audiences.

It’s faster than the original, too—combos actually flow now, and the AI doesn’t just stand there like a punching bag. That said, the CPU will absolutely humiliate you if you button-mash. There’s something weirdly satisfying about the way the Genesis handles the digitized sprites, even if they’re a little janky by today’s standards. Grab a friend, argue over who gets to play Scorpion, and try not to throw your controller after the third straight loss to Kintaro. Pure ‘90s chaos.
