Game Overview

Mortal Kombat 3 on the Game Boy came out in 1995, developed by Midway. It was one of the more ambitious fighting game ports on the handheld at the time, trying to squeeze a lot of the arcade experience onto that small green screen. You could tell they put effort into fitting it all in, even if some things had to be cut or simplified.

You pick a fighter like Sub-Zero or Sonya and battle through a series of opponents, one match at a time. The main goal is to beat everyone and stop Shao Kahn. The run button lets you dash quickly, which changes up the pacing, and you still get to perform special moves and fatalities, though the inputs can be tricky on the small buttons. It's a tough game, with some opponents feeling brutally cheap, but landing a fatality after a close match feels like a real victory. It captures that aggressive, fast-paced feel of the arcade in your hands, even with the limitations.
