Play Mortal Kombat I & II Online

Pulling off Scorpion's spear on a Game Boy d-pad feels weirdly satisfying, even when the fatalities look like flickering stick figures. Sub-Zero's freeze still stops jumps dead—just don't expect arcade-perfect graphics in your backseat tournament.

Game Overview

Remember when Mortal Kombat felt like the most violent thing you'd ever seen in an arcade? This Game Boy version of Mortal Kombat I & II somehow squeezes that same energy into a tiny cartridge—bloodless uppercuts and all. Yeah, the graphics are blocky and the fatalities look like someone animated them with sticky notes, but landing a flawless victory with Scorpion still feels amazing when you're stuck in the backseat of a car.

What surprised me was how well the controls translated. The d-pad makes pulling off fireballs and leg sweeps way easier than you'd expect from a handheld this old. Sub-Zero's ice blast actually freezes people mid-jump, which never gets old. Just don't expect the arcade-perfect experience—this is more like your friend doing an impression of Mortal Kombat with their hands, but it's a really good impression.

Perfect for when you need to punch Goro in the face during math class.
