Game Overview
Nightmare Busters is this weird, cool little run-and-gun that somehow slipped onto the SNES decades after the console's prime. You play as these two kids—Bucky and Nick—who have to blast their way through hordes of nightmare creatures with an arsenal of goofy weapons. The sprites are chunky and colorful in that classic 16-bit way, and the bosses are these ridiculous, screen-filling monstrosities.
At first I thought it was just another Contra clone, but there's something charming about how over-the-top it gets. You start with a basic pea shooter, but before long you're tossing boomerangs, firing spread shots, and dodging attacks from giant pumpkin heads. The difficulty spikes hard in later levels, though—some of those bullet-hell sections had me mashing the reset button more than I'd like to admit.
It's wild that this actually got a physical SNES release in the 2010s. Feels like digging up a lost cartridge from an alternate timeline.
