Nightmare Busters came out in 2013 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Arcade Zone and published by Arc Developments. It was one of those rare, late-era SNES releases that felt like it had been sitting on a shelf for twenty years, a side-scrolling run and gun game that would have felt right at home in the mid-90s.
You control one of two kids, Flynn or Nick, fighting through dreams with bubble guns that shoot different types of projectiles. The goal is to clear each screen of enemies before moving on to the next, navigating haunted carnivals and zombie forests. You collect power-ups to change your shot type and face large, multi-phase bosses that demand pattern recognition and quick reflexes. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty is unapologetically steep, reminiscent of games that demanded practice and patience. It feels like playing a co-op focused action title that time forgot.
