Play Nightmare on Elm Street Online
In Nightmare on Elm Street, explore side-scrolling levels, collect coffee to stay awake, and battle enemies while hunting down Freddy's bones to end his nightmare.
I remember picking up Nightmare on Elm Street for the NES back in 1989. It was developed by Rare and published by LJN, which was known for a lot of movie tie-ins at the time. The game came out during that era when licensed titles were everywhere, and you never quite knew what you were going to get. It was based on the films, of course, but it had its own take on the whole Freddy Krueger thing.
You control one of four teenagers, and your goal is to find and destroy all of Freddy’s bones to put an end to his reign. The game plays across a series of side-scrolling screens, both in the real world and in the nightmare realm. You collect coffee cups to stay awake; if your sleep meter fills, you’re pulled into the nightmare where enemies are tougher and Freddy himself can appear. You use a basic punch attack, but you can also find temporary weapons like rocks or knives. The difficulty is pretty relentless, with enemies respawning quickly and limited resources. It feels tense and unpredictable, especially when you’re low on coffee and trying to avoid dozing off at the wrong moment.
