I picked up Nintendo World Cup for the Game Boy around 1990, a Technos Japan release that came out when portable soccer games were still pretty simple. It was one of those titles you'd play between classes or on long car rides, fitting right in with the era's pick-up-and-play sports offerings.

You control a team of six players, moving them up and down the field to score goals against the opposing side. The main objective is straightforward: win the match. What stands out are the exaggerated physical moves, like slide tackles that send opponents flying, and special shots that can knock the goalie straight into the net. The pace is fast, almost frantic, and the difficulty spikes noticeably in later tournaments. It feels less like simulation and more like a scrappy, unpredictable arcade brawl with a ball.
