Game Overview

I picked up Nobunaga no Yabou for the Game Boy Advance back when it was new, a Japanese-exclusive strategy title from Koei. It was one of those games that felt perfectly suited to handheld play, offering deep, turn-based campaigns in the middle of Japan’s chaotic Sengoku period. While other games on the system focused on action or RPGs, this one asked for patience and planning.

You take command of a historical daimyo, managing provinces, raising armies, and engaging in tactical battles against neighboring clans. The main goal is unifying Japan under your banner, which involves careful resource management and diplomacy. Key mechanics include influencing enemy officers through bribes or promises, and combat that weighs factors like troop morale and terrain advantages. The pacing is deliberate, with campaigns that can stretch for hours, and the difficulty demands attention to logistics and alliances. It feels satisfying to outmaneuver rivals without ever drawing your sword.
