Oddworld Adventures came out on the Game Boy in 1998, developed by Oddworld Inhabitants. It was a time when you expected compromises for a portable version, and this was a condensed take on the world of Abe's Oddysee. It fit right in with the kind of thoughtful, challenging platformers that felt at home on that little screen.
You control Abe, a Mudokon slave trying to shut down the RuptureFarms meat processing plant. The game plays out screen by screen, and your main tools are sneaking, possessing enemies like sligs to make them shoot each other, and rescuing fellow Mudokons. The pace is deliberate, almost puzzle-like, as you figure out the exact sequence of actions to clear a room without getting torn apart. It feels tense and methodical, a constant test of your timing and planning.
