Ordyne came out in 1988 as an arcade game from Namco. It was part of that era when side-scrolling shooters were everywhere, but this one had a lighter, almost comical look that set it apart from the more serious space operas. The colors were bright, the enemies were silly, and the whole thing felt like a Saturday morning cartoon.
You control Dr. Hanbei and his assistant Tomari in a small flying vehicle, moving from left to right across each stage. Your main goal is to survive the enemy onslaught and defeat the boss at the end of each level. Key mechanics include collecting rainbow crystals to upgrade your weapons, which change depending on which character is piloting at the moment; you can also switch between the two characters mid-flight to adapt to different threats. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty ramps up steadily, especially when bullets and oddball enemies fill the screen. Playing it feels like a cheerful, unpredictable scramble where quick decisions keep you alive.
