I picked up Othello on the Game Boy back in 1990, a portable version of the board game developed by HAL Laboratory. It was one of those straightforward, no frills titles that filled out the early handheld library, a digital take on a classic that you could carry in your pocket. There wasn't a lot of flash to it, just the game itself, which was exactly what I wanted during long car rides or between classes.

You control the black or white discs, taking turns with the computer or a friend via link cable to claim squares on the 8x8 grid. The main goal is to end with more of your color on the board than your opponent, flipping their pieces by trapping them between your own. Key moves involve claiming the corners and edges to limit your rival's options, while the AI is surprisingly sharp about seizing those strategic spots if you leave an opening. Matches are quick but require focus; a few misplays can flip the whole board against you. It feels clean and tactical, a satisfying mental workout in a tiny package.
