Outlander came out on the Sega Genesis in 1992, published by Mindscape. It was part of that wave of early 90s action games that tried to blend different genres, mixing driving combat with on-foot exploration in a post-apocalyptic setting. It had a distinct look for its time, with large sprites and a dusty, sun-bleached color palette that really sold its desert wasteland vibe.

You control a lone driver surviving in a ruined world, switching between two main modes of play. Most of the time you're in your car, shooting bandits on the highway in a top-down perspective, carefully managing your limited fuel and ammo. When you run low, you have to stop in one of the small towns, which shifts the game to a side-scrolling brawl where you punch enemies to find resources. Your main goal is simply to survive as long as possible, pushing further into the wasteland while the difficulty steadily ramps up. It feels tense and unpredictable, a constant scramble for supplies against overwhelming odds.
