Outlander for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System came out in 1993, developed by Mindscape. It was one of those games that tried something a little different on the platform, mixing driving and on-foot action in a post-apocalyptic setting.
You control a survivor driving a car through dangerous wastelands, switching to a character on foot to explore buildings and talk to NPCs. Your main goal is to protect settlements from mutant attacks while gathering supplies and upgrading your vehicle. The gameplay shifts between top-down driving sections, where you shoot enemies and avoid obstacles, and first-person exploration in towns and dungeons. The difficulty is fairly high, with limited resources and aggressive enemies, but the constant switching between perspectives keeps things engaging. It feels tense and unpredictable, especially when your car is falling apart and you're low on ammo.
