Phantom 2040 on the Genesis is one of those weird 90s gems based on a cartoon nobody remembers. You play as Kit Walker, the latest in a long line of masked heroes, swinging through a grimy cyberpunk city where some evil corporation is basically turning animals into weapons. The whole thing feels like someone took Blade Runner and filtered it through Saturday morning cartoons.
What’s cool is how much freedom you get—you can take different paths through levels, and your choices actually change how the story plays out. I remember getting stuck for ages on this one sewer level where these mutant rat things kept ambushing me. The controls take some getting used to (that grappling hook whip thing is either your best friend or your worst enemy), but once it clicks, you feel like a total badass dodging lasers and punching robots.
Also, the soundtrack slaps. That industrial synth vibe perfectly matches the whole "dystopia with a purple spandex hero" aesthetic. Just don’t expect the plot to make much sense if you haven’t seen the show.
