Play Phantom 2040 (Beta) Online
Swing through neon-lit slums as a masked hero, using gadgets and a tricky grappling hook to outsmart enemies in this moody cyberpunk side-scroller. The synth soundtrack and branching paths give it way more depth than your average SNES brawler.

Phantom 2040 came out on the Super Nintendo in 1995, published by Hearst Entertainment. It was part of that wave of later SNES games that tried to push the hardware a bit further, with a darker, more complex tone than many platformers of the era. Based on the animated series, it stood out with its cyberpunk aesthetic and a focus on strategy over pure action.
You control the Phantom, a masked hero equipped with a bio-belt that lets you choose from several tools, most notably a grappling hook for swinging across gaps and accessing higher platforms. The main goal is to stop the evil Rebecca Madison from taking over the city of Metropia. You explore the city screen by screen, fighting corporate enforcers with a retractable energy sword or a bow that fires different types of arrows. The game features branching paths that affect the story, and the pacing is methodical; you need to think about your route and tool selection, as rushing leads to quick mistakes. It feels like a thoughtful, atmospheric adventure where every swing and shot matters.
