Play Phantom 2040 on Snes Online

Swing through a grimy cyberpunk city with a grappling hook, sneaking past corporate goons and unlocking different paths that actually change how the story ends. That factory level with the hidden switch still haunts me.

Game Overview

Phantom 2040 came out on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995, published by Hearst Entertainment. It was a time when licensed games were often simple cash grabs, but this one stood out for trying something more ambitious, a side-scrolling action game with a branching narrative set in a detailed futuristic world.

You control Kit Walker, the 24th Phantom, navigating a bleak, industrial city screen by screen. Your main goal is to stop the evil corporation Maximum from taking over, but how you do that is up to you. The game gives you a lot of freedom; you use a bio-energized grappling hook to swing across gaps and climb walls, and you can choose different routes through levels that lead to one of several possible endings. Combat is straightforward, using a sword or energy bow, but the real challenge comes from exploration and figuring out which path to take. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes slow, as you backtrack to find a key or a new gadget. It feels like a thoughtful puzzle wrapped in a gritty action game, where every decision carries a little weight.
