Game Overview

Phoenix is a 1980 arcade shooter from Amstar Electronics, later published by Centuri, and these days you can find it running in MAME. It arrived in arcades when space shooters were still defining the rules, a time when games were often built around a single, escalating idea. This one starts simply enough, but it doesn't stay that way for long.

You pilot a small ship at the bottom of the screen, moving left and right to shoot waves of alien birds. Your main goal is simply to survive the five distinct stages, each with its own enemy behavior. The first signature mechanic is the shield; you can raise a temporary energy barrier to block shots, but it takes a moment to recharge. Later, you face a large mothership that breaks apart into smaller, aggressive fighters you must destroy. The pacing is methodical at first, then becomes frantic as the screen fills with enemies and projectiles. It feels like a constant, tense calculation of when to hide and when to fire.
