Gaia Crusaders is a 1999 arcade beat 'em up from developer Noise Factory that I discovered through MAME. It fits right in with the era's side-scrolling brawlers, offering a familiar setup with a few of its own quirks to set it apart from the more famous titles of the time.

You pick one of five characters, each with a distinct weapon and fighting style, and then proceed to clear screen after screen of enemy soldiers and monsters. The main goal is simply to fight from one end of the stage to the other, defeating a boss at the end of each level. You have a standard attack button, a jump, and can perform special moves by inputting fighting game style commands; these moves drain a bit of health but are essential for crowd control. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially when you get surrounded. It feels like a solid, straightforward brawler that doesn't overcomplicate things but still demands your attention.
