Game Overview

Pokémon Gaia for the GBA is one of those rare hacks that actually feels like a full-fledged Pokémon game—just with way more polish. The story kicks off with earthquakes shaking up the Orblus region, and Professor Oak (yep, he’s back) recruits you to figure out what’s going on. The overworld’s got this cool, slightly grittier vibe compared to the usual bright Pokémon aesthetic, and the new maps actually make sense instead of feeling like a jumbled mess.

Battles are snappy, the custom sprites look great, and there’s a surprising amount of post-game content if you’re into that. I got stuck for a solid 20 minutes trying to figure out one of the early puzzles, but in a good way—it actually makes you think. If you’ve burned through the official games and want something fresh without straying too far from the classic formula, this one’s a solid pick.
