Pocket Jockey is one of those weird little Game Boy games that shouldn’t work but somehow does. You’re basically playing solitaire to make a tiny horse run faster—which sounds ridiculous until you’re three hours in, obsessively shuffling cards to breed the ultimate champion. The first race feels chaotic, but after a few tries, you start picking up on which card combos give your horse that extra kick before the finish line.

It’s got that classic Game Freak charm—goofy horse names, pixel-perfect animations, and just enough strategy to keep you hooked. I lost a race by one pixel because I misplayed a diamond, and I’m still mad about it. If you’ve ever wanted to yell “COME ON, SPOOKY MUFFIN” at a Game Boy screen, this is your game.
