Game Overview

Pocket Jockey was a Game Boy release from Intelligent Systems, the same studio that worked on Fire Emblem. It came out in the late 1990s, a time when the handheld was full of quirky, experimental titles that didn't always get a lot of attention outside Japan.

You control a jockey and their horse, managing races through a series of solitaire-style card games. The main objective is to win races, improve your horse's stats, and climb the ranks. Key mechanics include drawing and matching cards to build speed or stamina, then tapping the screen to urge your horse forward in the final stretch. The pacing is brisk, with races that demand quick decisions and a bit of luck. It feels strangely tense for a game about cards and horses, and winning by a narrow margin brings a real sense of relief.
