Game Overview
I first played Pool of Radiance on the Amiga back in 1988, a game developed by Strategic Simulations, Inc. and published by U.S. Gold Ltd. among others. At the time, it was one of the few computer role-playing games that truly captured the feel of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, offering a deep and structured experience on a platform known for its graphical and audio capabilities.
You control a party of up to six characters, choosing from various races and classes, and guide them through the ruined city of Phlan. The main goal is to reclaim the city from monstrous invaders, which involves exploring the area screen by screen, engaging in tactical turn-based combat, and managing your party's equipment and spells. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be steep, especially in early encounters where strategy matters more than brute force. Playing it feels like carefully unraveling a complex, dangerous world where every decision carries weight.
