Pool of Radiance was my first real taste of D&D on a computer—clunky by today’s standards, but back then, it felt like magic. You roll up a party of six (or grab the pre-made ones if you’re impatient) and ship them off to Phlan, a city half-overrun by monsters. The setup’s classic: rumors of treasure lure you in, but really, you’re just cleaning up the place one ruined district at a time.

First-person exploration feels like wandering through a sketchy alleyway—you never know when a random encounter’s gonna yank you into turn-based combat. The isometric battles are where it shines, though. Positioning matters, spells run out fast, and watching your thief finally land a backstab is weirdly satisfying. Just don’t expect flashy animations—this is all graph paper and imagination.

Fair warning: the NES version got stripped down hard. No weird currencies, smaller fights, and they axed the procedural dungeons. Stick to the Amiga or PC if you want the full, crunchy experience. Either way, it’s a time capsule of early RPG design—flaws and all.
