Pool of Radiance was my first proper taste of D&D on a computer—clunky by today’s standards, but man, it felt huge back then. You roll up a party of six (or grab the pre-made ones if you’re lazy), picking from classic races and classes, then ship them off to the ruined city of Phlan. The place is a mess—monsters squatting in abandoned districts, rumors of treasure luring idiots like your party in. First-person exploration feels like stumbling through a maze, and when fights kick off, it switches to this weird isometric grid where you take turns whacking goblins or getting whacked.

What’s cool is how your party actually grows. Thieves learn to backstab, wizards hoard spells like they’re rationing candy, and if you’ve got an elf or dwarf, they can dabble in multiple classes. The NES version chopped out a ton—no weird currencies, smaller fights, and they even axed the random dungeons—but it’s still recognizably the same desperate crawl through monster-infested ruins. Just with chiptune music.

It’s janky, slow, and occasionally brutal, but there’s something satisfying about dragging your ragtag crew from zero to heroes one bloody fight at a time.
