Game Overview

Pro Action Replay 2 was a cheat device for the Sega Genesis, released by Datel. It wasn't a game itself, but a tool that let you modify the code of other Genesis cartridges as you played them. You plugged it into the console, then plugged your game into it, giving you access to a menu where you could enter codes to alter almost anything.

You navigate a simple text menu to input codes that grant infinite lives, max out stats, or unlock hidden levels. The main objective is experimentation; you test codes to see their effects, often breaking the game in amusing or unexpected ways. Signature mechanics include searching for working codes in magazines or through trial and error, then applying them to bypass difficult sections or explore glitched areas. The pacing is entirely self-directed, turning challenging games into sandboxes where you control the rules. It feels like having a backstage pass to every game on the system.
