Pro Sport Hockey on NES is one of those classic top-down hockey games where the camera follows the puck up and down the rink โ simple, but it works. You've got all 24 NHL teams and nearly 300 real players (well, as real as 8-bit sprites get). The NES version throws you straight into exhibition matches, but the training mode is weirdly fun โ you can drill slapshots or play goalie against CPU attackers. There's also this "Super Cup" tournament where teams face off in round-robin matches, though honestly, I mostly just played exhibition games with friends.
The SNES version adds a full season mode (nice) and a shootout practice thing, but the NES one has that chunky, satisfying feel when you body-check someone into the boards. Controls are basic โ pass, shoot, hustle โ but games get surprisingly intense when you're down by one with 30 seconds left.
