Puyo Puyo 2 came out for the Sega Genesis in 1994, developed by Compile. It was a follow-up to the original Puyo Puyo, building on the falling block puzzle formula that was popular on the system alongside games like Columns. You control a cursor to rotate and place pairs of colored blobs as they fall. The main goal is to clear your own screen while sending garbage blobs to your opponent by creating chain reactions. Key mechanics include the ability to offset incoming garbage by building your own chains, and a new counter system that lets you return garbage if you chain quickly enough. The pacing is fast, and the AI opponents can be brutally efficient, especially in later stages. It feels tense and cerebral, demanding both quick reflexes and forward planning.
